About
The Angry Parrot
The Angry Parrot - TAP – was founded
when Jim Mason, a well respected lawyer, author and animal rights
activist stated in a speech at AR2003 that “"We need to make puppy
mills and the cruelties of the pet trade more prominent issues for
the animal rights movement. They are taking a back seat to the
enormity of the horrors of factory farming and farmed animal abuses
which have become, understandably, the focus of the movement. But
puppy mills, cat mills, bird mills and pet breeding mills are
factory farms. All of these animals are now factory farmed: they are
packed in tiny cages to crank out "crops" of babies to feed an
insatiable public appetite." He further stated that, "The parrot and
pet bird overpopulation crisis is not as bad as the dog and cat
problem-- it is worse, due to their longevity, high intelligence,
strong social needs, and the fact that this issue is not in the
public’s eye."
After this conference and listening to
Jim Mason, it became clear that the time has come for the animals in
the pet trade to have an organization dedicated to them.
And
so TAP was formed and we have named our parrot logo Mason . Mason is
a Black Headed Caique. To those that do not know parrots, this is a
small, stocky parrot with a large attitude. Caiques are stubborn,
clever and determined to get their own way. They do not back down
and do not forget. They will carefully wait for the right moment to
take a bite at those they consider to be an enemy. That enemy is the
Pet Trade.
